Wally Hicks
District 3 — Grants Pass


Wally was born in Eugene to a hard-working family on a tight budget. Wally also grew up in The Dalles, Oregon and Westminster, Maryland. At age sixteen Wally earned his Eagle Scout badge, and at age seventeen Wally enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. Two years later he was appointed to the United States Naval Academy (Annapolis). Upon graduating from Annapolis Wally was commissioned as an officer of Marines and he served tours of duty in Virginia, Okinawa, and Iraq. After being honorably discharged in 2005 Wally went straight to the United States Department of Justice Office of Immigration Litigation where he worked as a volunteer law clerk enforcing America’s immigration laws.

Later in 2005 Wally enrolled at the University of Oregon (U of O) School of Law and that same year he became active as a senator in the Associated Students of the University of Oregon (ASUO). Wally was elected to a second term in the Student Senate and was then appointed the ASUO Constitution Court where he served until graduation as an Associate Justice. Throughout law school Wally worked as a volunteer victim advocate for the Lane County District Attorney and he served on the law school’s Pro Bono Executive Board. Wally also served as the Site Supervisor and program Co-Director of the IRS certified Volunteer Income Tax Assistant (VITA) program for the U of O. Additionally, he was elected to the Board of Directors of the U of O Bookstore, he served on the Board of Directors of KWVA (88.1FM), served on the law school’s Student Bar Association governing committee, and was the law school’s official representative to the American Bar Association Law Student Division. For graduation credit Wally worked for a judge in the Lane County Circuit Court. Also during law school Wally was a member of the Lane County Human Services Commission Budget Planning Committee, the Springfield Chamber of Commerce Government Issues Committee, and briefly served on the Lane County Law Library Advisory Committee.

During the 2007 legislative session Wally worked first as an intern and later as a paid member of the small staff of State Senator David Nelson (R – Pendleton).

Wally graduated from law school a semester early and after passing the bar exam he went to work as a Deputy District Attorney for Josephine County, the birthplace of his mother, grandmother, and several other relatives. In addition to being the Juvenile Delinquency prosecutor for Josephine County, Wally handles an adult caseload that includes domestic violence offenders, repeat property offenders (Measure 57/ORS 137.717), and serious violent offenders (Measure 11).

Wally’s mother was a career newspaper reporter and his father recently retired as a machinist at Nike. Wally has been married to Laura for five years. He is a member of the National Rifle Association and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
